The Building Project

My name is Steve Pratt.

My firm has been in the construction business for 31 years.I continue, with my associates, to work on fine homes in Pacific Heights and Presidio Heights in San Francisco and also in the Town of Hillsborough.Taking on projects of room size and larger, we have worked on quite a number of interesting projects.

Sometimes we renovate a kitchen or bathroom. We have completed projects that involved the renovation of the entire interior of an existing house.Recent projects have each involved several rooms. For example, a recent project included a kitchen renovation plus a great room created from existing wasted space in the home.We have built room additions onto homes, and have done exterior work such as patios and outdoor kitchens.

Approximately 75% or our work has been design/build, with the planning and drawings done by me.Of course, we also have worked from the plans of other architects and designers.

Following the design phase, and upon receipt of the building permit, work is started on the project. In order that I might maintain maximum quality, I have always undertaken only one project at a time, working with the crew that is appropriate to the size of each job.Clients request either a small crew to minimize disruption to their house, or a large crew to minimize time on the project. Either way, the privacy and security of each job is guaranteed by my daily presence on the job.

The secret to quality in construction is patience.Every single aspect of a job requires the correct amount of concentration and time.Attention can never flag.Yet, this sort of focus is rare.“Get in and get out” is the mantra of many builders.Quality always suffers, but hey, profits are maximized.I never wanted to be a large contractor, with many crews, loads of equipment; with an office staff consuming resources.

My focus has always been to maximize the quality of a job.Experience gained from many years of work allows me and my crew to work continuously on a project, never losing interest.Yes, sometimes we get tired, and weekends are a blessing, but we have never lost interest in any job. With the patience that we have learned over many years, we are always ready to concentrate on the job at hand, and problems always become fixable

I read somewhere that there are 660,000 general contractors in the United States.I would estimate that 655,000 have spent their careers learning how to mazimize profit. “Get in, and get out” is a phrase that I have heard throughout my career. On the other hand, I would propose that the remaining 5,000 contractors have instead spent their years of experience learning how to do the job right the first time.

We are all what we have done.It is yours to choose which sort of contractor you want working in your home.
